What is granite?
Granite is a tough, durable rock composed primarily of three different minerals. These minerals are easy to see due to their different colors. The white mineral grains found in granite are feldspar. It is the most abundant mineral found in granite. The light gray, glass-like grains are quartz, and the black, flake-like grains are biotite or black mica.
The term granite comes from the Latin root word granum, meaning "grain". It is considered an igneous rock, which is formed by magma (molten rock) being cooled and becoming solid. All of the granite minerals have a Mohs Scale hardness rating of H=7 or H=6 with the exception of biotite, which is between 2.5-4.5. Biotite "plucks" slightely in polishing, but generally not when in use.
Please note: Granite is a natural product and therefore can vary widely in color and content, even if from the same product type, quarry or bundle.
When to choose Granite for your countertops
- You are looking for a distinctive, one of a kind look to your kitchen or living area.
- Natural products appeal to you more than synthetic options.
- You may choose to set hot objects on the material.
Bacteria and Granite
Bacteria requires several things in order to thrive and grow: oxygen, water, sunlight, nutrients, and a substrate to form on. The minerals in granite are toxic to bacteria. As a result, there is no habitable environment for the bacteria to live and grow on a granite surface
Is Granite "Green"?
No. It must travel more than 500 miles and is therefore not LEED certified. It is however a natural product, that can enhance your aesthetic indoor atmosphere.

Granite Durability
Granite is extremely durable. It is one of the hardest natural surfaces you can use for countertops. Your granite's polish is created through the use of diamonds and is highly scratch resistant.
Granite Heat Resistance
Granite is a stone naturally formed from extreme heat and pressure. Hot dishes directly from the oven and other sources of high heat will not adversely effect your granite.
Granite Stain Resistance
Granite is naturally a very dense stone. After your stone has been polished to a shine it becomes virtually impervious to liquids. Your granite is also impregnated with a sealer to create an even greater ammount of liquid and stain protection.

Granite Care and Maintenance
Granite care and maintenance is very simple. Granite is easily cleaned with warm water and a small amount of mild, non-abrasive soap. Common dish soap works great! It is also recommended that every six to twelve months an impregnator sealer is applied to your granite.
